Heinrich Flora (born June 10, 1829 in Mals ; † April 12, 1902 there ) was an Austrian community doctor and forest farmer .

Life

Flora was born as the son of the businessman Johann Flora (1783–1847) and Anna Dietl (1800–1873), the seventh of fifteen children. He studied medicine in Hall , Trient and Vienna . In 1854 Flora became the community doctor of St. Leonhard in Passeier , before he was called to Mals in 1860 because the previous doctor Christian Thöni had died. In addition to his work as a doctor, Flora also devoted himself to the construction of the water pipe, promoted the construction of a children's institution , the expansion of the school house and was a member of the agricultural association and the beautification association . There he was interested in the construction of the Merano-Mals-Landeck rail link . In 1884 the Vintschgau section of the Alpine Club was founded, the first director and founder of which was Flora.

Flora created a park above Mals. On his initiative, the bald and eroded Vinschger Sonnenberg was treated from 1865 . In autumn of the same year, “black pine seedlings obtained from a nursery” were used (quotation from H. Flora 1879). This can probably be described as the official entry of the black pine into the Vinschgau. Heinrich Flora reforested around 30 hectares of mixed forest above Mals between 1865 and 1879 .

Awards

Flora was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit with Crown by the Emperor for his commitment . One of the main streets in Mals was renamed Heinrich-Flora-Straße . The new headquarters of the health and social district in Mals bears his name. The nature park he created above Mals is named Flora Park in his honor . There is also a marble bust erected after his death, popularly known as "the white man".
