Henrique Schaumann

Henrique Schaumann , also Heinrich Schaumann , (born April 19, 1856 in Campinas , Brazil ; † March 8, 1922 in Geneva , Switzerland ) was a German-Brazilian pharmacist .

Live and act

In 1879 Henrique Schaumann took over the pharmacy Botica ao Veado d'Ouro (drugstore for the golden deer) from his father Philip Gustav Schaumann (1825-1892) in Rua São Bento in São Paulo . In Brazil he also held a number of public offices.

In 1905, Schaumann moved with his family to Europe, where he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Marine and Tropical Diseases and at the Physiological Institute at the University of Halle . For his studies on the causes and treatment of beriberi , he was elected to the physiology department of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina on March 12, 1917 ( matriculation number 3385 ). Schaumann spent his last years in Geneva, Switzerland, where he also died.

The Rua Henrique Schaumann in São Paulo was named after him.
