Live and act

Heinrich Graefenstein grew up in Hanover and Lemgo . He studied design, photography and film in Bielefeld from 1954 to 1958 and was an intern for theater photography and directing at the Brecht-Bühne ( Theater am Schiffbauerdamm ) in Berlin in 1955/56 . From 1957 to 1959 he made experimental films. He settled in Bielefeld, where he had been working as a freelance advertising photographer since 1960. From 1977 to 1979 and from 1985 to 1986 he taught photography, film and video design at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences . He contributed to the design of numerous illustrated books and also published his own photo books about Lemgo, Bielefeld and Rheda-Wiedenbrück .

As a cineast , Heinrich Graefenstein campaigned for the memory of the film director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau in his hometown Bielefeld. He suggested naming a street to Murnau and suggested putting a memorial plaque on the building at Bahnhofstrasse 6, where the birthplace used to be. On Gräfenstein's initiative, the Bielefeld Murnau Film Prize has been awarded since 1988. In 1988 he designed the most comprehensive exhibition on the life and work of Murnau to date, for which a catalog was also published.
