Heinrich Hopmann

Heinrich Hopmann (born January 23, 1897 in Rostock , † February 1, 1968 in Bad Godesberg ) was a German politician of the center , the CDU and mayor of Bad Godesberg.

Life and work

He grew up and went to school in Rostock, where he served as a soldier in the First World War from 1914 to 1918 . In 1923 he started teaching Latin, Greek and history at the Aloisius College in Godesberg, which was run by Jesuits . Since 1929 he was a member of the local council and the official representation. From 1930 he was also the 2nd chairman of the Godesberg Center Party. After the 1st chairman, Joseph Roth , had to resign from office on June 3, 1933 under pressure from the National Socialists , Hopmann became 1st chairman in Godesberg until the party dissolved on July 5, 1933. With the self-dissolution of the center he also lost all of his community offices. When the Jesuit school was forcibly dissolved by the National Socialists in 1939, he lost his job, but returned in 1941 to the college, which had been converted into the municipal high school, as a teacher and temporarily also as boarding school director. After the war, Hopmann was again active in local politics, so he became a member of the citizens' committee appointed by the occupation and the city council. In 1946 he was one of the founders of the Godesberg CDU. When Mayor Zander resigned from his office, the City Council of Hopmann transferred the office on November 3, 1948, which he held until March 18, 1963. During his tenure and initiative, a street was renamed in honor of his late friend and party colleague Roth, and partnerships were established with Maidenhead , Kortrijk , Saint-Cloud and Frascati . Two major construction projects were also carried out in the city during his tenure: the city theater and the city ​​hall .

Heinrich Hopmann was buried in the castle cemetery in Bad Godesberg.
