Heinrich II of Heiligenkreuz
Heinrich II. Von Heiligenkreuz (* around 1200; † 1284 in Heiligenkreuz (Lower Austria) ) was a Cistercian monk and abbot of three monasteries.
life and work
Heinrich was abbot of Baumgartenberg Abbey from 1250 to 1252, then from 1252 to 1259 abbot of Heiligenkreuz Abbey . There he mobilized numerous benefactors. With the support of Councilor Paltram Vatzo (also: Paltram in front of the Freithof) he founded the Cistercian convent St. Nicolai (Nikolaikloster) in Vienna. From 1259 to 1263 he was a monk in Heiligenkreuz.
When King Ottokar II. Přemysl of Bohemia founded the Goldenkron Monastery ( Zlatá Koruna Monastery ) in 1263 , Henry was appointed his first abbot. When he arrived on April 6, 1263, he brought part of the thorn relic from Christ's crown of thorns, which is still kept in Heiligenkreuz (hence the monastery name "Goldenkron"). After his beneficial work in Bohemia, Heinrich returned to Heiligenkreuz in 1280 and died there four years later.
