Benedict Gsell

Benedikt Gsell OCist (born January 28, 1823 in Vienna , † May 22, 1901 in Heiligenkreuz ) was an Austrian Cistercian monk , priest and historian .

Life

He entered the Heiligenkreuz novitiate on September 16, 1842 , made his profession on November 22, 1846 , and primed on August 1, 1847. From 1848 to 1852 he taught Old Testament Bible studies and oriental languages at the monastic Institutum Theologicum , from 1852 to 1860 the subject of the New Testament . He received his doctorate in theology on May 3, 1853 at the University of Vienna .

From 1854 to 1855 he was novice master , from 1855 to 1857 abbot secretary, from 15 October 1855 to 1 December 1860 librarian and from 1857 to 1860 prefect of theology students in the monastery. In December 1860 he came to the Heiligenkreuzerhof in Vienna as administrator . There he was responsible for the administration of the city courtyard and looked after the Heiligenkreuzer Stiftsarchiv, which was located in the building at the time. He was dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty in Vienna in 1860 and 1884; on March 11, 1867 he was elected permanent notary of the faculty.

He was mostly present in the negotiations that slowly revived an Austrian Cistercian congregation , around 1859 at the meeting in Prague on the occasion of the Schwarzenberg visit and in 1869 at the General Chapter in Rome. On February 10, 1874 he was by Pope Pius IX. appointed Consultor of the Curial Congregatio Indulgentiarum et Reliquiarum .

After the death of Abbot Edmund Komáromy , Gsell was co-administrator of the monastery from 1877 to 1879.

Awards

In 1881 Gsell was appointed to the prince-archbishop's spiritual council . Pope Leo XIII signed him in 1889. with the Cross of Honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice . The Cistercian General Chapter awarded him the title of Historiographus Ordinis in 1891 . On August 1, 1892, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order by the Austrian Emperor .
