Henry III. (Ortenburg)

Henry III. († 1345 ) was the son of Count Rapoto IV of Ortenburg and comes from the Bavarian dynasty of the Ortenburgers . After the death of his father, he succeeded him as the incumbent count, with his mother Kunigunde von Bruckberg taking over the guardianship.

In 1296 Heinrich III followed. underage his late father as Count von Ortenburg . Officially, however, he only took over his office after his mother renounced the regency in 1321. His guardians until then were his mother Kunigunde von Bruckberg, his grandfather Diethelm von Bruckberg and his great-grandfather Count Albrecht von Hals . As the only child of his parents, Heinrich acquired all of their goods after their death. Thus, after the great divisions of inheritance and the violent disputes of the Count's House of Ortenburg in the 12th century, there were no further major losses of territory.

In 1311 Heinrich III. Share in the Ottonische Handfeste , in which Duke Otto , who was in financial distress due to a war for the Hungarian royal crown, in which the lower jurisdiction in Lower Bavarian territories was shared with 70 noble families in return for a tax. This meant a great expansion of power for the small county of Ortenburg. Whether and to what extent Heinrich III. was involved in the struggles of Duke Otto between 1309 and 1311 for the Bohemian royal crown is unknown.

Henry III. seemed to have a good relationship with the dukes Heinrich the Elder , Otto III. and Heinrich the Younger , because in 1319 they transferred to him the rule of Wildeneck (Wildenegg), a bailiff belonging to Mondsee Monastery , which his ancestors once held. In addition, the dukes released all the burdens on them.

Furthermore, Heinrich often appeared as a witness in documents of the Bavarian dukes in the following years, including on April 24, 1336 for Duke Heinrich XIV. At the armistice agreed with Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian .
