Heinrich IV. Heilsberg von Vogelsang (* around 1360 in Heilsberg ; † June 4, 1415 ibid) was a theologian and prince-bishop of Warmia in the 15th century.

Life

Heinrich was the son of the Heilsberg baker Wichard. He used the name of his hometown as a nickname. From 1379 as chaplain to Bishop Heinrich III. Sorbom he enjoyed his trust. Appointed pastor of Santoppen from 1382–1386 , he studied theology at Prague University . 1386–1389 pastor of Wartenburg and official of the diocese. Since 1393 canon in Frombork , he was appointed administrator of the Allenstein Chamber of the Warmia Chapter from 1398–1401 .

Three days after the death of Bishop Sorbom, he was elected Bishop of Warmia on January 18, 1401 by the Warmia cathedral chapter . With the support of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order Konrad von Jungingen , this election was on March 29th by Pope Bonifatius IX. approved. With that he was the first native of Ermländer on the cathedra of the diocese. He received his episcopal ordination on September 8th in his hometown.

His good nature and very good relations with the Grand Masters of the Teutonic Order Konrad von Jungingen and Ulrich von Jungingen were interpreted in Polish historiography as a sign of weakness and lack of sovereignty. He tried to have the best possible relations with the order, whose protection (so-called umbrella bailiwick ) enjoyed the diocese. In 1410 he sent - in accordance with the contract - three units of Warmia soldiers with a strength of 250 armed forces to the great battle near Tannenberg . On July 27, 1410, together with other Prussian bishops, he recognized the patronage of the Polish king. The Grand Master Heinrich von Plauen declared this to be treason, drove Heinrich out of the Order and occupied the castle in Heilsberg . The efforts of Plauens to depose Heinrich by papal decree was stopped by the Polish king through diplomatic channels. After Plauen was forced to abdicate and Michael Küchmeister was elected as the new Grand Master, Heinrich was able to return to his diocese (document on Free Conduct of May 2, 1414). Heinrich died a year later and was buried in the Frauenburg Cathedral .
