Heinrich Keller (sculptor)
Heinrich Keller (born February 6, 1771 in Zurich ; † December 21, 1832 Rome ) was a Swiss writer and sculptor of classicism .
life and work
Heinrich Keller was a son of the politician and art collector Hans Kaspar Keller. In 1789 he began to study law in Bern . In 1791 he made the acquaintance of the sculptor Joseph Maria Christen and followed him as an apprentice to Stans and Lucerne . In 1794 he traveled to Rome, where he established himself permanently as a freelance sculptor. His circle of friends included the archaeologist Karl Ludwig Fernow , the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and the painter Angelika Kauffmann . From 1803, due to health problems, Keller increasingly switched to writing and trading in marble. He also made a name for himself as a journalist and author of art guides, as a poet and playwright and as a translator. In 1810 he became a member of the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia and also a corresponding member of the Danish Archaeological Society.
