Heinrich Labhart (born June 27, 1919 in Winterthur , † February 2, 1977 in Zurich ) was a Swiss physico-chemist ( physical chemistry , quantum chemistry). He was a professor at the University of Zurich .

Life

Labhart grew up in Küsnacht on, the Cantonal School attended in Zurich and in 1947 at the ETH Zurich at the Paul Scherrer in solid state physics with work About the mechanism of the electrical conductivity of the silicon carbide doctorate . From 1946 to 1948 he was in the laboratory of the Medical University Clinic in Basel, where he worked on the refinement of microelectrophoresis, and from 1948 at the ETH Zurich in the Industrial Research department, where he dealt with the speed of sound in porous media. From 1951 he was at Ciba in Basel in their physics department. In 1952 he completed his habilitation at the ETH Zurich (on the magnetic properties of ferrites and antiferromagnetism ) and then became a lecturer at the University of Basel . In 1956 he was with Robert Mulliken and John R. Platt at the University of Chicago . In 1960 he became head of the group for dye physics at Ciba and from 1958 was also an associate professor in Basel. From 1964, he succeeded Klaus Clusius as full professor of physical chemistry at the University of Zurich and director of the Physico-Chemical Institute. His successor was Georges H. Wagnière .

He dealt with the physics of dye molecules and photochemical primary processes, and with quantum chemistry (calculation of the electron distribution in heteroaromatics and sigma-pi interaction, the development of semiempirical methods and the interaction of molecules with photons in electric fields).

From 1967 to 1971 he was on the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
