(Daniel) Heinrich Ludwig Behrens (born August 20, 1787 in Hagenow , † March 20, 1839 in Lübeck ) was a German cartographer , topographer and officer .

Life

Behrens was born as the son of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin cartographer Ernst Christian August Behrens and his wife Dorothea Elisabeth, b. Ahlendorf, born. There are no records of his childhood or youth; What is known is that his father asked him to collaborate on mapping tasks at an early age .

Like his brother Carl Georg Behrens , Heinrich Ludwig Behrens also joined the Lübeck military and carried out surveying work as an officer. After early retirement with the rank of captain , he devoted himself entirely to cartography and topography . In the years 1820 to 1825 he carried out a cartographic survey of the suburbs of Lübeck. In 1824 he published the first map of Lübeck city center , which was based on precise measurements and reliably reproduced the geography of the old town on a scale of 1: 4600. An updated version appeared in 1840 after Behrens' death. In 1827 a detailed map of the territory of the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck followed, based on Heinrich Christian Schumacher's trigonometric network .

As early as 1818 Behrens had published a topography of the Stecknitz Canal along with proposals for its modernization. In 1829 he and his brother published the first part of a comprehensive topographical and statistical representation of Lübeck, which also contains information on the constitution, government, administration and legal system of the city.

Family life

Heinrich Ludwig Behrens had married Friderike Caroline Düsenberg (* June 12, 1795 - July 10, 1852), the daughter of Lübeck market governor Johann Philipp Düsenberg , on February 18, 1818 . The marriage resulted in four daughters and one son. Behrens was the tenant of a farm in Arfrade .
