Heinrich Moritz Gottlieb Grellmann (born December 7, 1756 in Jena , † October 13, 1804 in Moscow ) was a German statistician and cultural historian .

Life

Grellmann attended grammar school in Weimar and then studied from 1776 to 1781 in Jena , then in Göttingen . Already in Jena he seems to have received the academic degree of Magister ; at least there he gave a speech in the auditorium of the university, which he later called De prudentia qua negotium Augustanae confessionis peregerant confessores. Oratia solemnis (Jena 1780).

In 1783, Grellmann published in Göttingen the book Die Zigeuner, considered to be the first scientific work of tsiganology , a historical attempt on the way of life and constitution, customs and fate of this people in Europe, together with their origins , of which a second edition appeared in Germany as early as 1787. The author tried, among other things, to obtain results for historical conditions by comparing languages. As a result of his investigations, Grellmann claimed that the " Gypsies " came from India . The work also caused a stir abroad; it was translated into English as early as 1785 and into French in 1787. The French edition Histoire des Bohémiens (Paris 1810) was widely used.

In 1787 Grellmann was appointed associate professor and in 1794 full professor of the Philosophical Faculty in Göttingen. For use in his lectures, he worked on a plan of Germany's political science, which he published in 1790. The field of statistics , along with that of cultural history , especially church history , now remained his favorite subject, as his larger writings now published show. He published smaller treatises partly in Schlözer's state announcements (e.g. 1784 about mining in Ilmenau; 1785 history of parish fees ; also Doctor Luther's testament ), partly in Teutscher Merkur and in Götting's pocket calendar . In 1804 he was appointed Imperial Russian Councilor and Professor of Statistics at Moscow University , where he died on October 13 of the same year.
