Heinrich Otten

Heinrich Otten (born December 27, 1913 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † April 8, 2012 in Marburg ) was a German Hittitologist .

He studied Ancient Near Eastern and Indo-European Studies in Berlin from 1933 to 1939 and received his doctorate in 1939 . After military service and imprisonment from 1940 to 1947, he was a research assistant from 1947 to 1958, later head of department at the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin. In 1950 he was at the Humboldt University of Hittite habilitation , from 1953 to 1958 he taught as a professor. Since the winter semester 1958/59 he had a teaching position at the University of Marburg for ancient oriental languages ​​and cultures, on September 24, 1959 he became full professor for oriental studies, 1964 director of the ancient oriental seminar.

Ottens research area was the language and culture of the Hittites. Since 1936 he took part in the excavations in Boğazköy- Hattuša as a philologist to read the cuneiform texts . His work has been honored many times, since 1958 he was a member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature , 1979 to 1985 he was its president. In 1969 he became a member of the German Archaeological Institute , in 1972 a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . He has been a Corresponding Member of the British Academy since 1991 .
