Heinrich Pfeiffer (art historian)

Heinrich Wilhelm Pfeiffer SJ (born February 22, 1939 in Tübingen ) is a German Jesuit and art historian .

Life

He joined the Society of Jesus in 1963 and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1969 . After studying art history, classical archeology, Romance studies, philosophy and theology in Tübingen, London, Florence, Berlin, Munich, Rome and Basel, Heinrich Pfeiffer received his doctorate in 1970 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome as a Lic. Theol. and in 1973 at the University of Basel as Dr. phil. in art history . Since 1973/74 he has been Professor of Art History and Christian Iconography at the Faculty of Church History (Facoltà della Storia e dei Beni Culturali della Chiesa) of the Gregoriana.

Among other things, Pfeiffer has made a contribution to researching the history of the depiction of Christ and, in this context, has also dealt intensively with the Turin shroud , the Veronica image and the Manoppello veil .

He is an advisor to the Pontifical Commission on the Cultural Goods of the Church .
