Heinrich Schmitt (1979)

Heinrich Schmitt (born July 15, 1899 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , † February 8, 1985 there ) was a German architect and university professor .

Life

Heinrich Schmitt studied at the Technical University of Munich with Theodor Fischer , German Bestelmeyer and Richard Schachner, among others . He completed his training in 1922 with the 2nd state examination to become a government master builder (assessor in the public building administration). Initially, he worked as a salaried architect and site manager in social housing .

In 1932 he and Philip Blaumer founded an office community based in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. Initially active in the construction of single-family houses, successful participation in architectural competitions led to the first industrial construction contracts, especially for BASF in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. After the Second World War , Heinrich Schmitt continued to run the architecture office on his own. From 1957 there was a partnership with his future son-in-law Gerd Volker Heene , who continued to run the office on his own after Schmitt's retirement from 1971. Today the architecture office is still run by the third generation of Andreas Heene, Sebastian Heene and Christoph Pröbst.

From 1943 Heinrich Schmitt worked as a lecturer at the Technical University of Karlsruhe for "Building Construction", from 1945 for "Werklehre". In 1951 he received an honorary professorship at this university and taught in the subjects "Agricultural construction and design including cost calculation and public procurement".

The connection to the handicraft and the handicraft traditions laid the foundation stone for the work "Hochbaubaus", which he wrote and translated into several languages, and which appeared in its first edition in 1955. This standard work, which has proven itself particularly in the training of architects, is now in its 15th edition. Andreas Heene, also an architect and one of Heinrich Schmitt's grandsons, has been co-author for many years.

In 1978 the University of Kaiserslautern awarded Heinrich Schmitt an honorary doctorate (Dr.-Ing. E. h.). Heinrich Schmitt was married and had two daughters. He died at the age of 86 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein.

Work (selection)

Heinrich Schmitt's buildings are in the true sense of the word based on a functional conception of design that is free of formalisms. In the period between 1935 and 1971, a large number of workshops, laboratory buildings, switching houses and technical systems for a wide variety of industrial and pharmaceutical factories in and around Ludwigshafen am Rhein were built under his leadership. E.g .: production and warehouse buildings for Benckiser GmbH, Ludwigshafen; Complete plant of the Palatinate fuel factory, Ludwigshafen; Rheinische Olefinwerke , Wesseling; Production site of the Türmerleim-Werke, Ludwigshafen; etc. Among his most spectacular buildings are the four imposing skyscrapers of the Froschlache in Ludwigshafen-Friesenheim, which were completed in 1966 with 21 storeys and were then the tallest residential buildings in the city. The now listed indoor swimming pool North (1956) was built according to his plans.
