Gerd Volker Heene

Gerd Volker Heene (born May 25, 1926 in Homburg ; † October 13, 2009 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) was a German architect and university professor .

Life

Gerd Volker Heene grew up in Homburg. Just 17 years old, he was drafted into the Navy in 1943 and shortly thereafter deployed on a destroyer class warship in the Baltic Sea . After being transferred to the infantry , he was wounded near Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the spring of 1945 and was in the Traunstein military hospital at the end of the war . In 1945/1946 he graduated from high school and studied architecture from 1946 to 1950 at the Technical University of Karlsruhe . He passed the main diploma examination with Egon Eiermann as the best in his year .

He then went into business for himself, first building residential buildings and, through the planning and construction of a number of industrial and hospital buildings for the Saarland University, his first access to these large-scale structures, which were to be developed according to functional aspects. In 1957 he entered into a partnership with the industrial architect Heinrich Schmitt based in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . From 1971 he continued to run the architecture office on his own and in 1988 founded a branch in Munich , which is now run by one of his sons. Often project-related large numbers of stays abroad resulted in whole picture cycles of impressions made in pencil , ink or watercolors , which not only allow the flair of the beautiful wide world, but also the architect or designer to be felt. From 1971 to 1991 Gerd Volker Heene was professor for industrial construction , industrialized construction and design at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern . His research focus at that time related not only to the design of industrial, office and plant buildings, but also to the development of specific construction systems in industrial construction as well as industrialized construction methods.

After passing the architectural office on to his successors, he devoted himself to one last major topic, namely the " Pantheon construction site " in Rome. He was able to provide an insight into the history and construction of this masterpiece of Roman temple construction through a detailed search for clues that took several years to complete, as well as through a large number of scale construction sketches. He meticulously provided evidence that this grandiose dome could be built in sections in ancient times, which was primarily ensured by its spatial structure.

Heene was married with a daughter and two sons. He died after a short illness at the age of 83 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein.

Buildings (selection)

Alongside Walter Henn, Gerd Volker Heene was one of the most important representatives of modern industrial construction. The buildings planned and erected by him show a high degree of innovation despite the technical, constructive and functional components that have to be taken into account when designing highly complex industrial and plant buildings.
