Despite his lack of funds, Straube was able to study literature in Göttingen with financial support, mainly from August von Haxthausen, after his father went bankrupt . As a member of the “Poetic Shoemaker Guild on the Leine”, a student group of poets, and through the Bökendorfer Circle , he got to know numerous writer and student friends. In addition to Haxthausen, his brother Werner , Franz Ludwig von Hornthal , August von Arnswaldt , Georg Friedrich Benecke , Carl August Heinrich Zwicker , Ludwig Hassenpflug , Rudolf Christiani , the Brothers Grimm and others. Together with Hornthal he published the dowsing rod , according to the subtitle Ein Zeitblatt , which appeared twice a week; but only for half a year.

Straube and their niece Annette von Droste-Hülshoff also became known through the Haxthausens at Bökerhof Castle . A close relationship developed between the two, which the Haxthausens did not like because of the differences in class and denomination. It is reported that Arnswaldt "tested" Annette for her loyalty to Straube and brought about the end of their friendship.

Straube then devoted himself entirely to studying law - something that his friendship with Heinrich Heine , who arrived in Göttingen in autumn 1820, did not change - and graduated with a doctorate in Göttingen in 1821. In 1822 he took over the practice of a lawyer in the Kassel Higher Regional Court and married Johanna Marie Regenbogen in 1823. In 1832 Straube became public prosecutor for the province of Lower Hesse. In 1841 he was a member of the governing body of the Oberbaudirektion and in 1842 he was appointed appellate judge. He died on December 31, 1847 in Kassel.
