Heinrich Swoboda (born October 15, 1856 in Vienna , † June 13, 1926 in Prague ) was an Austrian ancient historian .

Life

Swoboda came from a family of officers and attended the Benedictine collegiate high school in Kremsmünster until 1874 . After graduating from high school, he began to study history at the University of Vienna , among others with Max Büdinger , Otto Benndorf and Otto Hirschfeld . Swoboda received his doctorate in Vienna in 1879 and went to Berlin University for further studies , where he became a student of Theodor Mommsen and Adolf Kirchhoff . In the winter of 1881/1882 he stayed in Athens and further developed his epigraphic knowledge under the direction of Ulrich Köhler .

In 1883 Swoboda received his habilitation at the University of Prague on the basis of his first work on Thucydides and other work, and from April 1884 taught as a private lecturer. He spent the winter of 1886/87 in Rome. In 1891 he became professor for ancient history in Prague, in 1899 professor for Greek antiquity and epigraphy, and also co-director (1911 director) of the seminar for classical archeology and epigraphy. Swoboda headed ancient history research at the University of Prague, of which he was rector in 1914/15, beyond the collapse of old Austria until his death in 1926. He declined calls to the universities of Halle and Graz.

Swoboda's research interests were Greek history and epigraphy , in particular state administration and constitutional law. His work applied, for example, to the Greek popular resolutions or the Athenaion politeia, which was newly found at the time and attributed to Aristotle . In 1902 he led an archaeological-epigraphic research trip through Asia Minor. Swoboda was a full member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and the Academy of Sciences in Vienna and Göttingen. He was also co-founder and managing director of the Society for the Promotion of German Science, Art and Literature in Bohemia from 1891 to 1900 .
