Heinrich Wölfli (also Heinrich Wölflin , born June 30, 1470 in Bern , † 1532 ibid) was a Bernese canon and humanist .

Life

Heinrich Wölfli (Latinized Henricus Lupulus ) was born in Bern as the son of Grand Councilor Konrad Wölfli and Elsa Brunner. From 1493 to 1494 he studied in Paris , where he obtained his Magister Artium . He then directed the Latin school in Bern, where Huldrych Zwingli was one of his students. In 1503 he became canon of St. Vinzenz Abbey , and in 1523 and 1524 he held the office of cantor there. In 1515 he donated the Vincent carpets for the choir stalls in Bern Minster . After his marriage in 1524 he was deposed as canon. From 1528 to 1529 he was the first choir judge , and from 1529 to 1532 as a sworn scribe.

Around 1501 Wölfli wrote the first biography of Brother Klaus on behalf of the Unterwalden government . The original of the manuscript was lost, but was used by Johannes Salat for his book on Niklaus von Flüe (1537) and printed in 1608 by Johann Joachim Eichhorn at Stephan Philot in Freiburg im Üechtland (VD 17-23: 255082S; copy from ZB Solothurn) . A modern edition with a German translation was published in 1917 on the 500th birthday of Brother Klaus, see list of works.

He wrote a pilgrimage report about his trip to Jerusalem , which he undertook with Hanns Wyman in 1520/21 . A new edition of the German translation by Johannes Haller 1582 with its pictures appeared in 1929, see list of works.
