Heinrich Welzhofer (born August 6, 1851 in Donauwörth , † 1911 in Rohrbach near Heidelberg ) was a German high school teacher, historian and playwright .

Life

The son of Karl Welzhofer (1810–1882), secretary at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, and Amalie Welzhofer, née Zimmermann, passed the Abitur examination at the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich in 1870 and then studied - like his older brother Karl Welzhofer jun. (* 1848) - Philology at the University of Munich . Another brother, August Welzhofer (* 1850), studied law .

Heinrich Welzhofer initially worked as a teacher training candidate and assistant at the Realgymnasium Regensburg and then as a study teacher at the Realgymnasium in Munich. Under Wilhelm von Giesebrecht he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD ; then he completed his habilitation. As a specialist author, he published numerous works on the history of antiquity and religions. After he was released for a year at his own request in 1891, he later worked in Wiesbaden (1896–1900) and in Baden-Baden (1900). From 1905 he was based in Rohrbach near Heidelberg.

Heinrich Welzhofer was married to the writer and editor Emilie Escherich from Munich. Their daughter Emilie, called Mela , worked as an art historian and specialist writer.

As a historian, Welzhofer initially followed the convictions of his teacher Wilhelm von Giesebrecht. In his work “ Der Europäische Völkerverein ” ( The European Association of Nations ) (1897) he represented an “imperialist” point of view. Among other things, he propagated the superiority of the European over other races and a "world empire of the Aryans " or all peoples of European descent and race. In 1907 a work was published about the founders of religions Buddha, Jesus and Mohammed. In it, "after a short introduction, Welzhofer treats the life and teachings of the three great religious founders and gives in a final chapter" Review and Outlook "an appreciation of the Buddhist, Christian and Mohammedan worldview".

He also wrote dramas.
