Life

He was born as the son of Justice Councilor Heinrich Franz Lawätz († 1762) in Rendsburg and was tutored in his parents' house by a private tutor. From 1764 he attended high school in Altona and from 1767 studied at the University of Leipzig , where he met the German poet Christian Fürchtegott Gellert . He later moved to the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. After completing his studies, he became government secretary in the then grand princely government. In 1775 Lawätz was elected monastery clerk and syndic at the aristocratic monastery in Uetersen and in 1801 administrator of the royal. Loan institute appointed in Altona. When this was lifted in 1813, he withdrew into private life and died on June 27, 1825.

Even in his youth he was drawn to poetry. In 1775 he published the collection “Spiritual Oden and Songs” based on Gellert's model and in 1777 the three-act comedy “Die Temperamente”, at the same time a philosophical treatise was published under the same title. This was followed by the one-act dramas "Damon and Phintias, or the pattern of friendship" (undated, only as a manuscript) and "The Diamonds" (1793), as well as a "Collection of mixed songs" (1790). Another publication was the four-part "Moralisches Wochenblatt" published in 1768. Afterwards Lawätz became known as a bibliographer through an extensive, but not completed work: “Handbook for book lovers and librarians” (1st part in 4 volumes, 2nd part in 2 volumes with supplements and a triple register), which was published between 1788 and appeared in 1795. The first two volumes deal with erudition in general, the following ones deal with the literature of biography. In 1790 his "New Journal of all Journals or Skiagraphische Uebersicht the most excellent journals" appeared. He also wrote “The virtues and vices, as well as general inclinations and passions of people, supported by examples from history”, 1789 to 1792 (3 parts).

Heinrich Wilhelm Lawätz was married to Lucie Magdalene Catharine Matthiessen. They had two children, the daughter Christiane Henningia and the son Heinrich Friedrich Lawätz (1791-1852). In 1807 he took over the management of his brother Johann Daniel Lawätz's business . His other brothers were Christian Otto Lawätz (1745–1800) and Ferdinand Otto Vollrath Lawätz .
