Heinrich von Stein

Heinrich Ludwig Wilhelm von Stein (born November 21, 1833 in Rostock ; † May 28, 1896 there ) was a German philologist , philosopher and rector of the University of Rostock .

Life

Von Stein came from a Mecklenburg landowner family. His father was Major Heinrich von Stein († 1839), his mother Friederike was the daughter of a legation councilor from Güstrow . He passed the Abitur in Rostock and from 1851 studied philosophy in Berlin, Bonn and Göttingen. In 1855 he received his doctorate with the dissertation De philosophia Cyrenaica and completed his habilitation in 1857. In Göttingen he taught from 1857 as a private lecturer and from 1862 as an associate professor. In 1864 he became governor Johann Albrechts, Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . In 1869 he married Elisabeth von der Lühe (* 1834). The following year he became associate professor in Rostock, in 1871 full professor and in 1890 rector of the university. His most famous doctoral candidate is probably Rudolf Steiner , who in 1891 was an external examinee with the thesis Truth and Science and the grade rite (sufficient) for Dr. phil. received his doctorate.
