Heinz-Dieter Smeets

Heinz-Dieter Smeets (* 1952 in Moers ) is a German economist and professor for economics , especially international economic relations, at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf .

Life

Heinz-Dieter Smeets studied economics with a focus on economic policy at the University of Duisburg from 1972 to 1976 . In 1981 he did his doctorate at the University of Bayreuth with the topic The monetary approach of the balance of payments theory for Dr. rer. pole. His habilitation on import protection and GATT took place six years later at the same university. In October 1991 he was appointed professor of economics at Heinrich-Heine University, where he still teaches and researches today. In 1992 he became head of the "Research Center for European Economic Relations" in the Faculty of Economics. In 2006 he finally became the holder of the Chair of Economics.

He is a member of the Verein für Socialpolitik , the European Economic Association and the European Integration Working Group (Bonn) .

Smeets was a co-signer of the euro-critical manifesto The Monetary Policy Decisions of Maastricht: A Threat to Europe (1992).
