Heinz Günter Horn

Heinz Günter Horn (born December 19, 1940 in Cologne ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist and monument curator .

Life

From 1962 Heinz Günter Horn studied Classical Archeology , Classical Philology , Ancient History , Philosophy and Education at the University of Cologne and the University of Bonn . After the first state examination in philology for the teaching post at secondary schools in 1966, he received his doctorate in 1968 with a dissertation on the mystery symbolism of the Cologne Dionysus mosaic under Heinz Kähler . From 1969 to 1987, Horn was employed at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn , most recently as deputy director and head of the Rhineland heritage conservation department . In 1987 he was appointed to the Ministry for Urban Development and Transport in Düsseldorf, which was responsible for monument protection and preservation in North Rhine-Westphalia . Until his retirement at the end of 2005, he was Head of the Department “Soil Monument Protection and Maintenance” as a ministerial advisor. In this function he was also a member of the Monument Preservation Subcommittee of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German National Committee for the Preservation of Monuments. From 1990 to 2006 Horn was chairman or deputy chairman of the Foundation for the Promotion of Archeology in the Rhenish Lignite District.

In 1995 the University of Cologne awarded him the title of honorary professor with the venia "Archeology of the Roman Provinces and Ground Monument Preservation". Horn has been retired since the beginning of 2006.

From a scientific point of view, Horn mainly deals with the art and culture of Greco-Roman antiquity, in particular with the history of the Roman provinces, and with the archaeological preservation of monuments in theory and practice.

Horn is among other things a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and the Antiquities Commission for Westphalia , advisory member of the Association of State Archaeologists in the Federal Republic of Germany, member of the Archaeological Trier Commission of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and honorary member of the Association of Friends of Antiquity in the Rhineland in Bonn. From 2014 to 2016 he was chairman of the Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection . After the specialist advice on cultural heritage of the Regionale 2010 (2006–2011), he continues to advise the Regionale 2010 project “Erlebnisraum Römerstraße”. Horn is also the chairman and member of numerous scientific advisory boards. Since April 2011 he has also been chairman of the Pantheon eV Bonn cultural promotion group . In addition, Horn is chairman and spiritus rector of the Roman Grave Weiden in Cologne, which was founded in 2018 .

Awards

On December 13, 2006, Horn was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon , primarily because of his diverse nationwide voluntary work in the field of landscape culture . In 2012 Horn received the Silver Hemisphere of the German Prize for Monument Protection from the German National Committee for Monument Protection . This recognized his extraordinary commitment to the interests of archeology and monument preservation as a scientist, networker, strategist, teacher and expert throughout Germany. On September 18, 2017, Horn was unanimously appointed an honorary member of the Archaeological Society of Cologne eV at the annual general meeting.
