Heinz Bilz (born May 18, 1926 in Berlin ; † June 26, 1986 in Mainz ) was a German theoretical solid-state physicist.

Life

After graduating from high school in February 1944, Bilz was drafted into the Reich Labor Service in Berlin-Wilmersdorf and then to the Navy. After the war and being imprisoned in England, he was an intern at the BBC company and from 1947 studied physics at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 1954 he obtained his diploma (matter generation in field theory) from Friedrich Hund and received his doctorate in 1958 from Friedrich Hund (electron states in hard materials). He was an assistant at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Frankfurt, but switched to Marianus Czerny at the Physics Institute in 1959 . In 1961 he went to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg as an assistant to Hans Marschall - but he worked more with Ludwig Genzel (1922–2003).

His field of work was lattice dynamics and infrared absorption in solids.

In 1964 he became a full professor and director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Frankfurt. In 1968/69 he was visiting professor at New York University (with Joseph L. Birman ), was then professor at the Technical University of Munich (where he began to deal with the explanation of Raman spectra in solids) and from 1971 director of the newly founded MPI for Solid State Research in Stuttgart. In 1983 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

As a theorist, he worked closely with experimental physicists.
