The area was already inhabited by Indians over a thousand years ago. After Louisiana was divided into parishes, a location was sought for the administrative headquarters of the new Winn Parish. The choice fell on the geographical center of the new Parish, and the city - like the Parish itself - was named after the legislative politician Walter Winn, who came from Rapides Parish . Winnfield was mentioned as early as the 1860 American Census , but had few residents and was considered poor and needy. The place only began to flourish with the development of the timber industry .
