Heinz Schmidt (politician)

Heinz Schmidt (born March 30, 1929 in Dresden ) is a former German politician ( SED ). From 1980 to 1990 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport in the GDR .

Life

After attending elementary school, Schmidt learned the trade of machine fitter at the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR). In the Dresden-Friedrichstadt depot he then worked as a locomotive heater in the youth collective “Max Seydewitz”, to which Helmut Scholz also belonged, later one of his predecessors as deputy minister for transport in the GDR. Schmidt became a member of the SED. He studied at the University of Transport in Dresden and received his doctorate in engineering. From 1967 to 1969 he was Vice President of the Reich Railway Directorate in Erfurt and from 1969 to 1971 Deputy Director General of the DR. From 1971 he was 1st Deputy Director General of the DR and Deputy Minister for Transport in the GDR. In 1975/76 he graduated from the party college of the CPSU in Moscow . On February 20, 1980 he became State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport of the GDR (successor to the late Volkmar Winkler ) and at the same time retained the function of 1st Deputy Director General of the DR. Schmidt remained in office until January 1990.
