The Heisterberger Weiher is an artificially dammed small lake southeast of Heisterberg , a district of the municipality of Driedorf in the Lahn-Dill district in Hesse , Germany.

Geographical location

The lake has a water surface of 9.6 hectares and is 530 m above sea level on the high plateau of the Westerwald , on the border between Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia . Immediately the southwest of the neighboring rises in Gemarkung Hohenroth located Höllberg (643 m).

The lake is located about 500 m north of the federal highway 255 and 75 m east of the district road K 83, which branches off from this north to Heisterberg. The long-distance hiking trail Westerwald-Steig runs along its north bank.

history

The Amdorfbach , fed from several sources in a meadow immediately southwest of Heisterberg, which flows into the Dill about 12 km further east at Burg , was about 1.5 km by order of Prince Wilhelm II of Nassau-Dillenburg in the years 1707–1711 dammed up as a fish pond west of its headwaters by an approximately 250 m long dam . Most of the work was carried out by the local residents in slave labor . The pond belonged to the lordly court of the princes in Heisterberg and was used for fish farming and as a water reservoir.

Todays use

Today the lake is a popular recreational area as a bathing lake . On the south bank there is a large lawn for sunbathing, a volleyball field and a children's playground . There is also a restaurant, boat rental and a year-round campsite. In summer, cycling and hiking trails, in winter the Höllkopf ski lift southwest above the lake and cross-country skiing trails add to the leisure offer .

On the first Saturday in August, the “Heisterberger Weiher” is traditionally in flames, with the lake shining in the splendor of large fireworks .
