The river rises on the eastern edge of the Bükk Mountains in the Miskolctapolca district of the Hungarian city of Miskolc . It then flows through the municipalities of Kistokaj , Nyékládháza , Hejőkeresztúr , Hejőszalonta and Hejőpapi . About four kilometers east of Tiszatarján the Hejő flows into the Tisza. The river has a length of 44 kilometers.
