Helene Schwarz

Helene Schwarz (born February 13, 1927 ) was a secretary at the German Film and Television Academy (DFFB), treasurer of the friends' association and student advisor.

Life

Helene Schwarz is the daughter of a Berlin innkeeper. She spent her childhood in Berlin; she saw the end of the Second World War in Onstmettingen . She later broke off her training as a department head in the Westend Hospital and began working at the DFFB in 1966, initially as a clerk for student affairs. She later became the assistant to the director of studies. During this time she also had minor supporting roles in the film business, for example in Zischke (1985) by Martin Theo Krieger and in Die Drehtür (1997) by Anne Høegh Krohn. Schwarz turned down the offer to become a director of studies himself. Together with Malte LudinShe edited the 1981 DFFB publication Sober in the 80s. For her work as DFFB secretary, even in old age, she was awarded the Berlinale Camera in 2005. Rosa von Praunheim , who calls her his “surrogate mother”, documented Schwarz from 2002 to 2005 in the documentary Who is Helene Schwarz? (2005). At the Berlin Film Festival 2010 she was awarded the First Steps Prize. She is considered the "soul of the German Film and Television Academy" and the "muse of German film".

Schwarz is the namesake of the Helene Schwarz Café in the Filmhaus Berlin and the Helene Schwarz Prize .

Helene Schwarz Prize

The Helene Schwarz Prize has been awarded every two years by the DFFB for outstanding film productions since 2006. It was launched on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the DFFB.
