The orchid Helenes Ragwurz ( Ophrys helenae Renz ) is a species of the genus Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) and thus of the orchid family. It blooms from April to June. It is also classified as a subspecies by some authors: Ophrys sphegodes subsp. helenae (Renz) Soó & DMMoore or Ophrys mammosa subsp. helenae (Renz) Soó .

features

This herbaceous perennial plant reaches heights of between 15 and 40 cm. The inflorescence includes two to eight flowers . The bracts are green and often tinged with red. The sepals look egg-shaped. The lateral petals are between 7 and 12 mm long and hairless. The lip is colored wine-red to dark brown-red and is covered with a velvety covering of short hair. Missing once.

Location and distribution

This species can be found in light forests, garrigues , on rough lawns and meadows with dry or moist soils rich in bases up to a height of 1000 meters above sea level. This orchid appears most frequently in northern Greece , on the Ionian Islands, but also occasionally in southern Albania and central Greece.
