Helga Exner , née Helga Menzel (born October 9, 1939 in Gablonz , district of Gablonz an der Neisse ) is a Czech - Danish goldsmith .

Life

Exner's native town of Gablonz was known for its glass and jewelry industries , and Exner's ancestors had become wealthy as a result. At the age of five, Exner, her mother and her three siblings fled the Red Army to East Germany. Helga Exner was smuggled to her grandparents in the Allgäu by a gypsy . A few years later, her mother and siblings followed. They later moved to the Black Forest . Her father was released from Czechoslovak war captivity after six years and moved with his family to Langenberg near Gütersloh. After graduating from the Waldorf School in Krefeld , Exner began training as a goldsmith at the Rudolf Steiner Seminar in Bad Godesberg at the age of 16 . There she met Bent Exner , moved to Denmark and married him on January 3, 1961.

The couple founded a joint workshop in Vendsyssel in 1966 and had five children over the years. In 1983 Helga Exner separated from her husband and moved to Aarhus . There she worked at the Rudolf Steiner Pædagogseminariet. In 1985 she founded her own workshop in Aarhus, which she later moved to Odder . On June 8, 1988, she married Peter Schou, with whom she has a daughter.

Helga Exner is considered one of Denmark's most renowned jewelry artists who - together with her then husband Bent Exner - renewed the production of jewelry on an artistic level. Her works are characterized by freely designed, often dance-moving forms. She often works amber into her pieces of jewelery and combines them with turquoise enameled inserts. They have been shown in major solo and group exhibitions. In 1995 the Art Museum Horsens organized a retrospective of her works from 1965 to 1995. In the same year an art book appeared on her work from 1985 to 1995. On her 70th birthday, a second retrospective took place in Odder in 2009.
