from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helga Ginevra , real name Helga Weidenbach , (* 1938 in Weißenfels as Helga Melges ; † 1996 in Berlin ) was a German painter .

Life

Helga Ginevra was born in Weißenfels in 1938. Artistic as a child, she began to paint and draw from the age of 11. From 1960 to 1968 she worked in her parents' goldsmith's workshop in Melges in Weißenfels. In addition, she was a competitive water ski athlete from 1961 to 1968 , where she won the title of German Champion several times .

After the birth of their daughter Claudia (1969), she married the painter Dieter Weidenbach in 1970 . Until 1980 she then worked as an independent freelance painter in Weißenfels. From 1977 to 1979 she was a master student at the Academy of Arts of the German Democratic Republic in East Berlin in the class of Wieland Förster . In 1979 she went on a study trip to the Soviet Union , visiting Moscow , Leningrad and the Caucasus , among others .

In 1980 Ginevra was allowed to go on a study trip to the so - called non - socialist economic area for the first time , after which she traveled to Vienna , from where she did not return to the GDR . Instead, she moved to West Berlin , where she stayed until her death in 1996.

Artistic creation

In general, Ginevra's pictures are characterized by large formats and the use of strong, but mostly dark colors in a mixed technique of their own style. The content is often of a feminist nature; a large part of the work consists of portraits of women and female nudes .

Homage to Goya

Between 1987 and 1990 several works were created which the artist dedicated to her adoration of Goya , the most famous painter in Spain. Ginevra mainly referred to Goya's Caprices , which, as etchings, represented a satirical critique of Spanish social life. In doing so, large-scale paintings of strong, dark colors were created from the small-format drawings by Goya at Ginevra. The painter is particularly impressed by the confrontation of the female figures with male opponents exaggerated in the grotesque . She traces “the passionate path of the feminine through the history of our time”.

Phantasms

Under this name a cycle was created in which Ginevra brought her personal dreams and phantasms of a very feminine world onto the canvas. Older and newer styles such as cubism , realism and surrealism mix with one another. In her pictures, female eroticism and threat are combined in a unique way. The women are (entirely in the feminist sense) very self-confident, often beautiful and dignified. Men rarely appear in the pictures, if they do, they are portrayed negatively and violently.
