The Helgrindur mountain range with its highest peak Kaldnasi (988 m) is located on the Snæfellsnes peninsula southwest of Grundarfjörður in western Iceland .

Surname

The name means fence of hell . This could be due to the fact that in earlier times one of the most important trading centers was on Snæfellsnes in Búðir on the south side of the peninsula and therefore several roads that were considered difficult led across these mountains.

description

It is an elongated mountain range that extends from Egilsskarð and Tröllkerling (873 m) in the southeast to Kaldnasi (988 m) in the northwest. There is a sharp bend to the north in the mountain range and it extends a few more kilometers to Mýrarhyrna (578 m).

Volcanism

The volcanic mountain range is one of the highest mountain ranges on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The central volcano of the Lýsuskarð volcanic system is also located here .

The volcanic system is the middle one on the peninsula and lies between the systems of Snæfellsjökull and Ljósufjöll .

Weather sheath

The high mountains divide Snæfellsnes together with the other two main mountain ranges into two climatic zones, each of which belongs to Faxaflói Bay in the south and the large Breiðafjörður fjord in the north.

Notorious are the sharp fall winds that sweep down from these mountains in storms from the north or south on the leeward side.

Rockclimbing

Helgrindur is popular with mountaineers.

You can z. B. from Kalfárvellir on the south side up to him.
