The five-nerved dwarf sunflower ( Helianthella quinquenervis ) is a species of the genus dwarf sunflower ( Helianthella ) in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

The five-nerved dwarf sunflower is a perennial plant with a pleio shape - tap root that reaches heights of 50 to 150 centimeters. The upper part of the stem is absent- minded , wire-haired. The leaves are opposite, elliptical-lanceolate, pointed and up to 50 centimeters long, with 5 protruding nerves; the lower ones are long-stalked, the upper ones seated. The heads are individually terminal, long stalked, nodding at flowering time and have a diameter of about 10 centimeters. The envelope is 4 to 5 centimeters wide. The bracts are 1.5 to 2 inches long, eilanzettlich, pointed and ciliate on the edge. The disc has a diameter of 2 to 4 centimeters. The approximately 20 ray-flowers are 2.5 to 4 inches long. The chaff leaves are thin-skinned.

The flowering period is from May to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.

Occurrence

The five-nerved dwarf sunflower occurs in the far west of the USA, in the Rocky Mountains and in New Mexico on moist mountain meadows, in pine and oak forests at altitudes of 1400 to 4000 meters. Its distribution area includes South Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and northern Mexico.
