Heliconia wagneriana is a species ofthe Heliconia family (Heliconiaceae). It is native to Central America and northern South America.

description

Heliconia wagneriana grows as a large, evergreen , perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 1.75 to 4 meters. Usually only an unbranched "pseudostem" is formed with three to four leaves with a wavy blade. The longest leaf ever "pseudo trunk" is up to 150 centimeters long and 30 centimeters wide.

The up to 21 cm long inflorescences are upright, the inflorescence can be found in two rows arranged seven to thirteen bracts . Each coil consists of 15 to 20 flowers. The hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The bracts are white at their base, but dark green and largely glabrous at the extreme end, only occasionally slightly hirsute on the sepals .

distribution

Heliconia wagneriana is distributed from Belize through the whole of Central America to Colombia.

Systematics and botanical history

The species was first described by Otto George Petersen in 1890 . Carl Ernst Otto Kuntze named the species Bihai wagneriana in 1891 .
