history

A sawmill , flour mill , distillery, and pub , all run by George Reeves, make up the historic core of Hell. Reeves moved in the 1830s from the Catskill Mountains in New York in the area. In 1841 he bought a sawmill in what is now Hell Creek. In addition to the sawmill, Reeves bought 400 hectares of land in the vicinity of the sawmill, where he built a flour mill. The farmers in the area successfully grew wheat. Reeves opened a distillery where he distilled excess grain into whiskey . Reeves died in 1877. Reeves' family sold the land to a group of Detroit investors in 1924 .

Place name

The Country Store in Hell (July 2005)

There are two versions of how the name of the place came about among the inhabitants of the place. In the first version, the place name goes back to some travelers of German origin who got out of a carriage on a sunny afternoon in the 1830s and one of them exclaimed: "So beautifully bright!" prevailed. The second variant goes back to the time after Michigan became a state. At that time, George Reeves was asked how the place, whose settlement he had co-founded, should be called. His answer was: “ I don't care, you can name it 'Hell' for all I care. "- German for example" I don't care, you can call it 'hell' because of me. "In any case, the name was officially established on October 13, 1841.

Culture

Hell's most important export item is kitsch . The city claims to a completely non-accredited (fictional) College to possess the diplomas signed, sealed and singed (Engl. Signed, sealed and singed ) awards.

In the early 1930s, Michigan's postmaster received inquiries from collectors asking Hell to postmark their stamps . Hell didn't have a post office, but used the one in Pinckney, three miles away. On July 15, 1961, a post office was opened in Hell, which was open from May 1 to September 30.

Several regular events jokingly or ironically use the name of the community. On the third Saturday in September, the Just Hearse'N Around Hearse Club (Hell's only auto club) annually hosts the Last Rides Reunion , the largest hearse gathering in the state. Hell sponsors a running event called Through Hell Run , which includes a ten-mile and 4.8-mile race. The participants receive a T-shirt with the imprint I Ran Thru Hell .
