The Hellebach is a 4 km long brook in the Wolfenbüttel district , which rises northeast of Achim and flows south of the village into the Schiffgraben-West . It is one of the rare find places of a genus of mayflies .

Geography and mayflies

The Hellebach rises in the Feldmark about two kilometers north-east of Achim as a mostly deeply incised, rather straightforward Feldbach, which often falls dry in summer. In the local area of Achim it takes on a stream also coming from the east from the left and has a relatively natural course in sections. It flows further south below Achim and joins the Schiffgraben-West near the Tempelhof farm.

A lack of bank planting and a dead straight course give the water a bad structural grade . Regular drying out allows only a limited number of species to survive, but this includes the extremely rare genus Paraleptophlebia werneri . As of 2002, this had only been proven here and at another point in the Outer catchment area, which is unique in Germany.

Elbe-Weser watershed

The Hellebach belongs to the catchment area of the Weser . A little further east of Achim, the brooks flow into the east-flowing part of the New Graben in the Großer Bruch , which in turn drains via Bode and Saale to the Elbe .
