Bandt began as a Luther interpreter (Luther's doctrine of the hidden God , Berlin 1957). Encouraged by Dietrich Bonhoeffer's demand for a “non-religious interpretation” of the Bible , he later endeavored to develop a theology that reached people, especially under the conditions of the GDR. Bandt was close to the church brotherhoods , i.e. the left wing of the Confessing Church . In this respect, political commitment was indispensable for him, which motivated him to work in the Weißensee working group . Bandt was instrumental in ensuring that distance and freedom from the SED policy were maintained in the faculty even under difficult conditions (Confidence and responsibility. Theology in conversation with questioning contemporaries, Berlin 1980).

That concluded u. a. also that he advocated unarmed service by Christians for the construction soldiers .

He was a member of the Weißenseer working group , the church brotherhood in Berlin-Brandenburg, and defended the practice of youth consecration .

Hellmut Bandt had been a member of the Christian Peace Conference since 1960 and was elected to the working bodies of the 2nd All-Christian Peace Assembly in Prague in 1964.

His son Uli is pastor of a congregation in Bremen.
