Hellmut Schnackenburg

Hellmut Schnackenburg (born September 27, 1902 in Halle (Saale) , † August 15, 1974 in Bremen ) was a German conductor and general music director .

biography

Schnackenburg grew up in Altona . He studied music. From 1920 to 1930 he was répétiteur and Kapellmeister at the Cologne Opera House and music director at the Wuppertaler Bühnen .

In 1937 he became general music director of the Philharmonic Society in Bremen. His contract was not extended in 1943, so that opera director Fritz Rieger succeeded him in office. In July 1945 he was returned to the position of General Music Director of the Philharmonic Society . The concerts took place after the war in the Decla cinema in Walle or in the Bremen town hall . In 1947 the concert could take place again in the concert hall Die Glocke . In 1948 he was appointed professor by the Bremen Senate and in 1951 director of the Bremen Music School . In 1953 he was followed by Paul van Kempen as general music director. He retired as the music school director in 1968. He was succeeded in this position by Hans Joachim Kauffmann .

  • A bust of him was placed in the concert hall Die Glocke in 1999.
