Helmut-Wolfgang Brett

Helmut-Wolfgang Brett (born October 27, 1949 in Stetten (Kernen im Remstal) , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German diplomat and historian . He has been retired since 2015, lives at Lelkendorf Castle and works as a writer.

Career as a diplomat

Brett was the German Ambassador to Turkmenistan from 2012 to 2015 .

After joining the Foreign Service in April 1980, Brett worked at several embassies of the Federal Republic of Germany in the USSR , Somalia , the USA , Armenia , Russia and Kazakhstan . In Germany, Brett held positions in the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Chancellery and the Federal Press Office .

From 2001 to 2003 he was head of the Eastern Europe department in the Federal Government's Press and Information Office and from 2003 to 2005 he was head of the foreign trade department at the Foreign Office. From 2005 to 2008 he was head of the press and information department at the embassy in Moscow and was accepted into the high-ranking society of Friends of the Kremlin Museum in recognition of his cultural activities. Before being transferred to Ashgabat, he was permanent representative at the German Embassy in Astana , Kazakhstan, from 2008 to 2012 . In Turkmenistan, he initiated the annual cycle of cultural events under the motto “German Spring”.

He was awarded the Magtymguly Medal on December 13, 2014 in a solemn ceremony in the Turkmen University for services to the “research, dissemination and propaganda of the works of the classic Turkmen literature as well as for the great personal contribution to the development of friendly relations in science and education , Culture and Humanities ”.

Life

Born in 1949 in Stetten (Kernen im Remstal) , Ambassador a. D. Brett studied history, political science and geography at the University of Stuttgart after completing his military service . Then he was a teacher at grammar schools in Baden-Württemberg until he joined the Foreign Service . He speaks Russian, English and French. He is divorced and has three grown children.
