Helmut Bauer (MfS employee)
Helmut Bauer (born October 17, 1930 in Judenbach ) is a German former colonel and department head in the Ministry for State Security (MfS) of the GDR .
Life
Bauer, the son of a woodcutter , completed an apprenticeship as a machine fitter after primary school and worked in this profession until 1951. In 1949 he joined the SED and in 1951 became a full-time employee of the Thuringian state administration of the MfS in the department for counter-espionage (department IV).
In 1951, Bauer was transferred to East Berlin , where he first worked in the espionage department (department II), then in the counter-espionage department (main department II) and later in the internal security department (department XXI). In 1962/63, Bauer completed a course at the SED district party school in Kleinmachnow . In 1963 he became deputy head and in 1970 head of the internal security department of the MfS. In 1975 he reached the rank of colonel. In 1978 Bauer retired.
