Helmut Gabriel (physicist)

Helmut Gabriel (born September 27, 1933 in Reichenbach (Przybymierz), Silesia ) is a German physicist and science organizer.

Gabriel studied physics at the Technical University of Braunschweig with a diploma in 1958 and a doctorate in solid state physics in 1960 ( temperature dependence of the Hall constants of monovalent metals at low temperatures ). He then worked as an assistant at the Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Braunschweig and from 1963 at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, where he completed his habilitation in 1966 ( The influence of temporally fluctuating fields on the hyperfine splitting of Mössbauer radiation ). In 1968/69 he was at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory . In 1969 he became a professor at the Free University of Berlin . 1980 to 1982 he was Vice President of the Free University of Berlin for Natural Science and Research. He was dean of the physics faculty three times. In 2001 he retired.

Gabriel was a visiting scientist at the Institute for Nuclear Research in Orsay (1970), at the Nuclear Research Institute in Grenoble (1975) and at the University of Aarhus (1984). From 1978 to 1980 he was on the scientific advisory board of the Hahn-Meitner Institute and from 1981 to 1987 on its supervisory board, and from 1979 to 1984 he was a member of the Bessy supervisory board. From 1992 to 1996 Gabriel was a member of the supervisory board of the Institute for Semiconductor Physics (IHP) in Frankfurt (Oder) , where he was involved in converting it to a GmbH after the fall of the Wall. He was also on the founding committee of the Institute for Low-Temperature Plasma Physics in Greifswald and the Institute for Surface Modification in Leipzig .

From 1988 to 1993 he was a member of the Science Council (1993 as chairman of the scientific commission), where he was the chairman of the physics evaluation committee in the integration of research in the new federal states and advised the state of Thuringia on science issues in the 1990s.

He dealt with theoretical solid state physics, atomic and molecular physics and theoretical physical chemistry. Among other things, he investigated exciton dynamics in crystals and clusters, photo- dissociation of molecules, nonlinear dynamics in lattices (and molecules) via the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLS).

From 1975 to 1986 he was the spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center on Hyperfine Interaction, where he headed the Theory of Dynamic Nuclear-Electron Interaction . He was also the deputy spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center on Energy and Charge Transfer in Molecular Aggregates , where he and J. Bosse headed the project Transfer Processes in Open Molecular Systems .

In 2012 he received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon, in particular for his role in the integration of the new federal states in the field of physical research.
