Schulz wrote numerous novels, short stories, radio plays and features. His story Meschkas Enkel was edited for radio as a radio play (Rundfunk der DDR 1979; adaptation: Renate Apitz; director: Fritz Göhler) and filmed for television (DFF 1981; director: Klaus Gendries ); Schulz's story The Fall of Man was released under the title Verbotene Liebe (DEFA 1990; Director: Helmut Dziuba ). His novels Years with Camilla (1979 into Czech) and Das Erbe (1984 into Slovak) have been translated into foreign languages . On March 23, 1983, Schulz received the Heinrich Mann Prize from the GDR Academy of the Arts for his novel Das Erbe . After German reunification , Schulz was initially able to keep his literature at Hinstorff in Rostock , but then gradually only in lesser-known publishers.
His publications are characterized above all by an uncommon density of narration. Its recurring theme is everyday life in divided Germany in the middle of the 20th century. The novel Dame in Weiß (1982), which was published in three editions in the GDR and which Schulz also edited as a film script, describes contemporary history from the perspective of an adolescent with all his experiences in the Allied bombing war. While the collection of stories Zeit ohne Ende , published in 1988, tells the story of unruly young people in Nazi Germany, among other things.
After the fall of the Wall and the peaceful revolution in the GDR , Schulz wrote The Blue Barrier (1995), a seafaring novel that, however, had no commercial success. In addition, biographies of the Empress Augusta and court reports from the Hohenzollern house were published by the Neues Leben publishing house in Berlin. Since 2013 his works have been published as e-books by HeRaS Verlag, Göttingen.
