Helmut Kracke

Helmut Kracke (born April 14, 1900 in Charlottenburg ; † February 16, 1986 in Cologne ) was a German actuary , university professor and author . He is known for his popular science books on mathematics .

Life

Helmut Kracke began studying metallurgical engineering in 1919 at the TH Aachen . He later studied technical physics and in 1924 passed the exam for a graduate engineer . Until 1928 he was assistant for mathematics with Otto Blumenthal , later for mechanics with Ludwig Hopf and for aerodynamics with Theodore von Kármán .

Between 1928 and 1936 he was deputy chief mathematician at a life insurance company in Magdeburg , then chief mathematician and from 1938 member of the board of Deutsche Beamten-Versicherung in Berlin until 1948. In 1947 , he received his doctorate in Berlin. From 1949 he was chief mathematician and member of the board of directors of the Gerling Group in Cologne. In 1966 he retired.

Services

As an honorary professor, Kracke held lectures on actuarial mathematics at the University of Cologne from 1948 to 1970 .

Since 1948 he was a board member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Versicherungsmathematik , from 1958 as chairman and from 1975 as honorary chairman. He was also a member of the board of directors of the German Society for Corporate Research and the German Society for Insurance Science eV in Berlin. He was President of the 18th International Congress of Actuaries in Munich in 1968 with 1,350 participants. Such a congress took place on German soil for the first time in 60 years.

In 1957, Kracke campaigned strongly for the pension reform, which incorporated actuarial principles and calculations.
