Helmut Löffler

Helmut Arthur Löffler (born January 6, 1934 in Brno / Thuringia ) is a German scientist and engineer. As a professor at the Technical University of Dresden , he carried out basic research in the field of networks and data transmission from the 1970s. He is co-author of the first German-language paperback on computer science, published in 1992.

Life

Löffler is the fourth child of the worker and postman Albert Löffler and his wife Berta Löffler nee. Dötsch. After attending elementary school in his birthplace, he attended the Arthur Becker School in Eisfeld . He passed the Abitur in 1952 at the Geschwister-Scholl-Oberschule in Hildburghausen .

From 1952 to 1958, Helmut Löffler studied electrical engineering and nuclear technology at the Technical University of Dresden and obtained the academic degree of graduate engineer in physical nuclear technology . After completing his studies, he was a scientific assistant and later a senior assistant at the Institute for the Application of Radioactive Isotopes at the Technical University of Dresden (since 1961 Technical University). As part of contract research financed by industry, he worked for several years at the Dresden Research and Experimental Institute for fluid flow machines . A result of this research formed the basis of his dissertation A , with which he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. PhD.

In 1970 Löffler acquired the academic degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences (Dr. sc. Techn.) At the then faculty for data processing of the TU Dresden, later equated with Dr.-Ing. habil. The content of the corresponding dissertation B was his research results on electrical measurements of non-electrical quantities using nuclear radiation in various branches of industry.

As part of a friendship contract between the Universidad Técnica del Estado de Santiago de Chile and the TU Dresden, he held a research professorship in Santiago from 1969 to 1971. In 1971 he was appointed to the TU Dresden as a university professor. His main area of work became computer networking . In 1974 he was appointed full professor for information acquisition and transmission at the TU Dresden. The team he led in the Information Processing Section was involved in the design, construction and later use of the DELTA computer network , a joint project between the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and the TU Dresden. From the beginning of the 1980s, local networks (LAN) and high-speed data communication belonged to the focus of his work in basic research and research use.

From 1977 to 1990 Löffler was head of the computer systems science department and from 1986 to 1990 he was the director of the computer science center for higher education in the GDR at the TU Dresden. In 1990/91 he worked as a visiting professor at the Department of Computer Science in Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (USA).

Together with Jürgen Meinhardt and Dieter Werner , Helmut Löffler wrote the first German-language paperback on computer science, which was published in 1992 by the Leipzig specialist book publisher. In 1992 he founded an engineering office and finally left the TU Dresden in 1993 at his own request. The main areas of work of the engineering office were optimization of communication networks and IT service management .

As part of the Senior Expert Services (SES), he worked as a visiting professor at the Universidad Tecnológica de la Zona Metropolitana de Guadalajara in Mexico in 2008 .

Helmut Löffler is married to Ursula Löffler, b. Wittrin, youth advisor at Stepin in Bonn (Student Travel & Education Programs International).

He is an honorary member of the Saxon Telecommunications Center e. V.
