Helmut Lieth

Friedrich Heinrich Helmut Lieth (born December 16, 1925 in Steeg , Amt Kürten ; † April 16, 2015 ibid) was a German ecologist .

Life

Lieth received his doctorate in 1953 from the University of Cologne and in 1960 became a private lecturer at the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim . He was then visiting professor in Venezuela and Colombia, professor of botany at the University of Hawaii and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , USA. From 1977 to 1992 he was a professor at the University of Osnabrück where he held the chair for ecology.

Helmut Lieth was married to Magdalena Lieth, nee Roth, since 1952. The couple have a daughter and three sons. After her death he married Marina Lieth, nee Mechtanova. They have a daughter together.

Research services

Lieth gained wide fame through the climate diagram world atlas (1960–1967) published together with Heinrich Walter . The clear form of the climate display (Walter Lieth climate diagram ) conceived here has received the highest international recognition.
