Life
Schiemann began his career in the GDR and made feature films for DEFA from the early 1960s. Schiemann made his feature film debut in 1962 with the comedy Das Glas Wasser . This historical film, based on the play of the same name by Eugène Scribe , is about disputes over access to the ruler on the throne of England in the 18th century. A year later, Schiemann shot the love film Vanina Vanini based on a template by Stendhal . His theme was the problems of cross-class love in the 19th century. Schiemann also chose a classic drama as the basis for his next film. With The Persians he filmed a tragedy by Aeschylus in 1966 . A year later banished Schiemann's novel The Case of Sergeant Grischa of Arnold Zweig , in two parts for the DFF to the canvas. Josef Karlik took on the role of the protagonist.
In 1969 the four-part television film Sankt Urban followed, about the controversial uranium mining by Wismut AG in the Erzgebirge between 1946 and 1950, which Konrad Wolf had already made the subject of in the film Sun Seeker and Werner Bräunig in the novel Rummelplatz . The literary model was a novel by Martin Viertel , the script was written by Schiemann himself. In 1976 Schiemann filmed In Search of Gatt , the story of the same name by Erik Neutsch, who was highly respected in the GDR and published three years earlier . Here he dealt with the events of June 17, 1953. A year later, based on the novel A Serious Life by Heinrich Mann, followed the film Die Verführbaren , which premiered on Boxing Day at the DFF. Schiemann wrote the script himself again for this film, which is set in the red-light district of Berlin during the Weimar Republic .
Schiemann last worked for DEFA in 1979 when he - again based on a template by Heinrich Mann - wrote the script for the television film Suturp - A Love Story , directed by Gerd Keil .
