Helmut Schiller

Helmut Schiller (* 1938 in Jena ) is a German author who mainly writes novels, but also wrote documentaries.

Life

Helmut Schiller studied philosophy in East Berlin in 1957/58 and journalism in Leipzig from 1960 , but broke off both times. In between there are two years of military service in the NVA. With the later writer Harald Gerlach , he hitchhiked through Western Europe after fleeing to the West in the spring of 1961 . Back in the east, he worked in a gravel pit in Erfurt , then for several years in a publishing house in Jena .

From 1965 to 1969 he completed a teaching degree at the University of Leipzig and was a German teacher at various schools. After leaving the teaching profession, he worked for the German Central Library for the Blind in Leipzig from 1986 to 2001 .

After his debut novel Antonia's father in 1989/1990, he took part in a one-year special course for authors at the Leipzig Institute for Literature . He lives in Gerlingen near Stuttgart.
