Helmut Schmidinger (March 2007)

Helmut Schmidinger (born May 11, 1969 in Wels , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian composer .

Life

Schmidinger received important musical impulses from Gertrud Jetschgo (Landesmusikschule Wels), then studied piano (with Heinz Walter) and oboe (with Arthur Jensen ) at the then Mozarteum University of Music and Performing Arts , where he studied composition with Gerhard Wimberger , Hans-Jürgen von Bose and Gerd Kühr studied. He attended master classes with Friedrich Cerha and Ernst Helmuth Flammerer in composition and with Dexter Morrill in computer music and live electronics.

As a guest in Tokyo, New York, Prague or Paris and at festivals such as the Lucerne Festival , the Bregenz Festival , the Carinthian Summer or the Bruckner Festival Linz , Schmidinger shows himself to be a composer who confesses to tradition and is in an inspiring dialogue with the past constantly redefined and original reference approaches highlighted and ultimately commented on in his personal language. In this way he does justice to contemporary and lively communication with the recipients - his main concern as a composer and musician. In his work as a music artist and editor of older works, the reference to music history is reflected in the close proximity to the sources. The music mediator Schmidinger is characterized by intensive pedagogical experience, which he creatively implements in composition pedagogical concepts for young people and students. Concert organizations (Wels subscription concerts, Treffpunkt Neue Musik, Jeunesse Wels) complement his positions in musical life.

A music school in Graz was named after him in 2019.

style

With “... between thin slices ...” (five interludes for large orchestra, commissioned by the Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen) Helmut Schmidinger presented his op. 100 in 2010/11. Alluding to the reduced “sandwich position” of contemporary works in current works Concert programs (an “in-between existence” within much-played classical music standards) conceal sensual-lyrical, percussive-gripping and “between the lines” iridescent-colored music that is inspired by texts by Goethe, Rilke, Schiller and Bachmann. The incipit “between” is common to these poems. Referring to literature is only one of the strategies in Schmidinger's varied work with extra-musical references. The work processes are different: Certainly in “.... probably not in such a serious concert” (2003/04) for violin, violoncello and piano the idea of the “inner monologue” based on Schnitzler's lieutenant Gustl is the musical style and the rhythmic texture, thus attracting Schmidinger in the final Chapter (2005) for violin, speaker, snare drum and string orchestra (commissioned by the Wiener concert-Verein), the idea to form the guided along the text piece (solo concert) from the content comparison of Individual and collective in Kästner's original of the same name. The interval construction, which functions as a cipher, reflects Kästner's textually staged time stages. Something else happens when Schmidinger builds humorous music around cooking recipes ( Blunzenknödel, Stülltes Gansl ) or puts sounds on old cider presses ( “Where the Bartl gets the cider” ). He adopts the "original sound" of Mozart or Mahler from their "word compositions" - be it that Schmidinger in "... and I long for him to death" (2010/11) (oscillogram for soprano and chamber ensemble based on letters from Gustav Mahler to Anna von Mildenburg) "fictitious" emotions of the Mildenburg follow the "real" letters of Mahler, or whether it is that he honors the "exploited" anniversary boy in Mozart year 2006 alternatively by sending letters apart from the much-cited "Bäsle correspondence" as a text fundus serve and become part of the song cycle “... that they give shade and light” for baritone and orchestra.

Schmidinger almost always bridges the gap to composers of the past by consistently avoiding direct musical quotations. His work always surprises with ingenious varieties of new reference ideas. As commissioned by the city of Augsburg on the occasion of the 58th German Mozart Festival, the cycles (2008/09) for string quartet draw their constitutive sound material from the interval reference of the key sequence of Mozart's string quartet cycles.

The type of work clearly determines the tonal language. The passionate promoter of youth composes for young performers in a different tone, likes to address intimate and subtle matters with a chamber music cast and subtle tone and expresses his affinity for musical drama and narrative moments through a large number of complex performers. Schmidinger's desire to compose close to the instrument is realized primarily through dedicatory pieces - among the interpreters you can find Christian Altenburger , Wolfgang Holzmair or Ildikó Raimondi . Dennis Russell Davies and Krzysztof Penderecki conducted his works.
